How It Works — Step by Step

1

Look at Both Numbers

Start with your single-digit addition problem. Example: 4 + 5

2

Put the Bigger Number in Your Head

Find the larger number and hold it in your mind. In 4 + 5, put 5 in your head.

3

Count On the Smaller Number

Starting from 5, count up 4 more: 6, 7, 8, 9. You can use your fingers to keep track — that's perfectly fine!

4

You've Got Your Answer!

The last number you said is the answer.

4 + 5 = 9! 🎉

💡

Mr. Aube's Tip:

It's totally okay for kids to use their fingers when counting on! If it's a strategy that works for them and that's the stage they're at, let them be confident. Taking away their fingers won't build confidence — it'll do the opposite!
